Valentine's Legacy Blog

As we near Queen Anne’s 100th year anniversary in 2025, we have been collecting stories of your memories of Queen Anne through the years.

With Valentines’ Day just around the corner, we thought we’d share a particularly romantic story we received from Robyn.

Her grandmother, Margaret, arrived in New Zealand onboard the ‘Rangitiki’ on the morning of Christmas Eve 1930,
just a few hours before she was to be married.
She had been corresponding for many years with a man called Duncan
who she’d met twice before in Edinburgh and was engaged to be married.

Duncan took Margaret to a local tearoom and gave her a beautiful box of Queen Anne Chocolates (and some money for a passage home in case things didn’t work out) before they walked up the aisle to begin their life together. They were married for over 50 years and every Christmas Eve Duncan gave Margaret a box of Queen Anne Chocolates.

Here’s a beautiful photograph of Margaret on her wedding day which featured in The New Zealand Home Pictorial
on Wednesday, January 14th 1931.
